How does MOFAN TMR-2 Quaternary Ammonium Salt Catalyst Optimize PIR Rigid Foam Production
PIR (Polyisocyanurate) rigid foam is widely used in refrigerators, freezers, continuous polyurethane insulation panels, and pipe insulation fields. The performance of catalysts directly determines the brittleness, fluidity, adhesion and dimensional stability of foam products. As a domestic quaternary ammonium salt trimerization catalyst (CAS: 62314-25-4) equivalent to Evonik TMR-2, MOFAN TMR-2 is highly recognized by global polyurethane manufacturers. This article answers common industrial questions to introduce its core performance, application dosage and solutions for typical production pain points.
MOFAN TMR-2 is a high-efficiency quaternary ammonium salt solution with the chemical name of 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium formate. It is a tertiary amine catalyst specially designed to promote isocyanate trimerization reactions for PIR rigid foam production.
With a standard appearance of colorless to light yellow liquid, it features stable physical properties: a relative density of 1.07 g/mL at 25°C, viscosity of 190 mPa·s, and a hydroxyl value of 463 mgKOH/g. Compared with traditional potassium-based catalysts, TMR-2 delivers a uniform and controllable foam rise curve and significantly improves the fluidity of polyurethane systems.
In addition, it has far lower corrosiveness than alkali metal catalysts, effectively reducing wear and corrosion on mixing heads and production equipment. Its unique polar molecular structure greatly enhances the adhesion between foam and metal surfaces such as aluminum foil, solving common delamination problems of insulation panels. Manufactured by MOFAN Polyurethane, TMR-2 fully matches imported TMR-2 specifications with stable quality and sufficient production capacity.
MOFAN TMR-2 is mainly applied in PIR rigid foam fields, including refrigerator and freezer insulation layers, continuous polyurethane sandwich insulation panels, and industrial pipe insulation. It can also be used for post-curing of flexible molded foam.
For continuous PIR laminate production lines, the typical dosage ranges from 0.4 to 1.2 phr (per hundred parts of polyol), which can be adjusted according to the target trimer content and production line speed. It shows excellent synergistic effects with potassium octoate. The optimized formula of 0.5 phr TMR-2 plus 0.5 phr potassium octoate achieves efficient trimerization performance while greatly reducing foam brittleness.
For pour-in-place large-diameter pipe insulation, TMR-2 provides outstanding material fluidity and low foam friability, ensuring perfect molding effects. It is hygroscopic, and the shelf life of TMR-2-containing polyol blends is 3-6 months. Moisture should be strictly avoided during storage to prevent side reactions with isocyanate.
1. Lowers foam friability: Compared with TMR-30, TMR-2 quaternary ammonium salt system produces foam with much lower friability while maintaining excellent fire resistance, ideal for high-standard insulation board production.
2. Optimizes uneven cell structure: Properly increasing TMR-2 dosage and reducing strong gel catalyst usage enables controllable bubble growth, effectively improving rough and uneven foam cell structure.
3. Improves dimensional stability: TMR-2 promotes the formation of high-content isocyanurate trimer rings, significantly enhancing the thermal stability of PIR foam and solving the problem of unqualified room-temperature aging tests (dimensional change > 1%).
4. Prevents aluminum foil delamination: Its polar molecular characteristics strengthen the bonding force between foam and aluminum foil surfaces, reducing panel delamination and scrap rate.
MOFAN TMR-2 is a corrosive chemical with the hazard statement H314, which causes severe skin burns and eye damage. During operation, full personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn. Working areas must be well-ventilated, equipped with emergency showers and eyewash stations. Operators are prohibited from inhaling vapors or aerosols, and direct contact with eyes and skin must be avoided. Contaminated leather products should be discarded immediately, and hands must be cleaned thoroughly after work.
For storage, TMR-2 must be stored in a tightly sealed container in a dry, cool and well-ventilated warehouse, kept far away from acids and alkalis. Long-term overheating above 82.22°C (180°F) will cause product degradation. In terms of transportation, the product complies with international transportation regulations and is non-dangerous goods. The standard package is 200kg per drum, and customized packaging is available according to customer demands.
